Let me Count the Ways ...

Peanut was home from college this weekend for Fall break.  It's always nice to have her in the house, even if we aren't really doing anything together. Just knowing she's home makes me feel good.  She had sent me a text earlier in the week saying she was determined to bake a pie from scratch for the holidays this year.
Since I have the most interior space, my family comes to my house for Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. My mom is usually the one tapped to bake the pies, and I lovvveee her pumpkin pie! But Peanut had great timing, because I had just made that same decision myself a couple of days before she told me about hers. I had already even gotten a lead on a great pie crust recipe from FoodThoughtsofaChefWannabe.  We decided we needed to practice while she was home this weekend and since I'm so dang competitive, I turned it into a contest, of course. Mostly for bragging rights, but also for the first option to pick which type of pie to bake for Thanksgiving dinner. Rich was selected as Judge. Yes. I'm a shoe-in to win! If you follow my Facebook page, y'know, THIS one, you would've seen pictures of my pumpkin pie and her apple pie we baked on Saturday.  In case you missed it, here they are:

Look delicious, right?

I decided the judging would be for dessert, so I got busy and fixed up some bbq baked chicken, mashed potatoes, corn and homemade mac-n-cheese for dinner.  We all stuffed ourselves before cutting into the pies. All the kids had to take at least one bite of each pie. Peanut Butter, my little loyal one, immediately picked my pie. Judging was to be based on the crust alone, however, as that is what we are trying to master. Rich, standing tall and proud and in control (read: drunk with power), took his bite of each pie, savoring the taste. He then picked at each of our crusts. Another bite. He announces he has made his decision. Peanut starts the drumroll on the island. He walks over to me, puts his arm around me and whispers in my ear, "Baby, I love you ... but ..." only to be interrupted by Peanut's "YES!" accompanied by a couple of fist pumps and this huge beam of pride and victory across her face.

Grrrrrr. Traitor Husband!  Let me count the ways you shall pay ...

    1. They were sooo good. Both of them really were. My crust was just a little too thick. I should have rolled it out thinner. I used the second crust to make a banana cream pie last night, though :) It was yummmmmy!

  7. The only upside to being beaten by your daughter is that she can now make all pies that need to be made. You get to sit back and enjoy. I'll be thrilled when my kids can bake like that!
